Staff augmentation or managed services?

The difference between buying people and buying an outcome, and how to tell which one your business needs.

5 min read

Staff augmentation and managed services both add capacity, but they are different purchases. One buys people. The other buys an outcome.

Staff augmentation

A partner recruits, vets and manages professionals who work as part of your team. You direct the work, use your own tools and set the priorities. The partner is responsible for hiring, training and replacement. You are still responsible for the result.

Good when you know the role, have the management capacity and want more hands quickly.

Managed services

A partner takes responsibility for an outcome, such as keeping your technology running, and delivers it to agreed service levels. The partner decides how the work gets done and reports on results.

Good when you would rather manage results than manage people.

Where the line blurs

Some arrangements sit in between: a team of dedicated people supervised by the partner and measured on agreed targets. What matters is who is accountable for quality and who directs the daily work. Ask the question directly before you sign.

How to choose

  • Do you have someone to direct the work every day? If yes, staff augmentation fits. If not, look at managed services.
  • Is the work a role or a result? Roles suggest augmentation. Results suggest managed services.
  • How much control do you want over method? More control points to augmentation.

It is not either-or

Many businesses use managed services for the foundation, such as IT support, and staff augmentation for skilled seats in their own teams. The two work well together when responsibilities are clear.
